Wu_Experiment 1_Cutting Sheet

  • X-acto knife: used for precision cutting for thinner materials similar to scissors
  • Scissors: used often for thinner materials such as papers, ribbons, ect.
  • Kitchen knife: used for cutting foods for cooking preparation

x-acto knife, scissors, kitchen knife

canvas, masking tape, & double sided adhesive foam

X-acto knife needed to pass a few times for a clean cut, thicker material, so more resistance

scissors cut through with little resistance, tape adhesive residue left on scissor blades

knife had to make severals passes to cut through foam
Summary:
  • all three cutting techniques were waste-free mechanical
  • masking tape had a clean edge, x-acto knife left the canvas a little frayed, double sided adhesive foam edge was smushed/flattened because of pressure from kitchen knife
  • materials under little stress since they are all flexible
  • masking tape cut cleanly, canvas has cleanly cut, but began to fray over time, cut side of double sided adhesive foam was flattened
  • discourage from cutting with kitchen knife because it is not extremely reliable for cutting foam and does not keep the integrity of the foam’s raised feature
