- X-acto knife: used for precision cutting for thinner materials similar to scissors
- Scissors: used often for thinner materials such as papers, ribbons, ect.
- Kitchen knife: used for cutting foods for cooking preparation
x-acto knife, scissors, kitchen knife |
canvas, masking tape, & double sided adhesive foam |
X-acto knife needed to pass a few times for a clean cut, thicker material, so more resistance
|
scissors cut through with little resistance, tape adhesive residue left on scissor blades
|
knife had to make severals passes to cut through foam |
- all three cutting techniques were waste-free mechanical
- masking tape had a clean edge, x-acto knife left the canvas a little frayed, double sided adhesive foam edge was smushed/flattened because of pressure from kitchen knife
- materials under little stress since they are all flexible
- masking tape cut cleanly, canvas has cleanly cut, but began to fray over time, cut side of double sided adhesive foam was flattened
- discourage from cutting with kitchen knife because it is not extremely reliable for cutting foam and does not keep the integrity of the foam’s raised feature
